Why is God referred to as HASHEM?

Hashem is God. The literal translation of Hashem is the Name. The first person to refer to God as Hashem was Moses, as quoted in the Torah. Today we all refer to God as Hashem. We fear of stating God's name in vein, which is the third commandment from the ten commandments. The punishment for mentioning God's name in vein is severe, therefore we refer to God as Hashem, the Name.
